HOW TO RUN AUTO DISCOVERY ON ENTUITY NETWORK ANALYTICS (ENA)
This article shows you how to run Auto Discovery in Entuity Network Analytics in order to take better control of your network management.

The option is available under the Main menu > Administration> Device Inventory
By clicking on the Auto Discovery button, it brings up a dialog that will allow you to enter one or more IP Address Ranges. Now you can enter the IP Range with the beginning range and the end range by clicking the Add button. Also, you could have entered an IP Subnet or an Individual Device Name or a List of Device Names by selecting the other options on the drill-down menu.

You can keep this as public for test purpose or use to practice and use the Public String for Read-only.
However, in a production environment, you’d be using a Non-public String. If you’ve got more than one string being used, you can enter multiple strings set by adding them in. It will always try and use the one at the top of the list first and if that fails it’ll go down the list until it finds one the works
By default, we’ve got a number of system object IDs excluded. These represent a range of servers with SNMP agents. If you want to manage the servers and find them during an IP Address Range scan, simply select them one by one and remove them from the list. In addition, if you want to put exclusion ranges into the list by adding those ranges in the “Excluded Addresses” area. For now, I’m going to leave everything else to default and start the Auto Discovery.
The Auto Discovery is now finished. Depending on the size of the Address Range or Ranges that you’re scanning, it will take either longer or shorter amounts of time.
If you have checked the option “Review results before adding”, you can see the View Results button has become available after Auto Discovery. If that is unchecked it would immediately take every device that’s been found and then tried to take them under management. Here are the devices have been found during Auto Discovery process.
Auto Discovery won’t explore for servers, therefore, those results are going to be the infrastructural devices such as Firewalls. One or more of the results can be eliminated from the list by simply unchecked the box.
Tips: Attention to the Management Level on the right side of the dialog, you have got options on how to manage these results. It will be the Full Management at default, but you do have options to reduce the level of management.
Basic: Only discovers the device itself with some rudimentary monitoring.
Ping only: Doesn’t use SNMP at all. It just allows the IP Address to be pinged using an ICMP loopback operation.
For now, let’s leave them as the Full Management and add them to the Inventory which will begin the process of actually taking those devices under management. You will see the list of the devices that we’ve just added to the Inventory and are working through one by one to work out whether they can be managed and what type of devices they are. The screen from time to time will auto refresh or you can simply hit the F5 refresh key.
However, if there is any device turning red at the end, please place your cursor over and explore more about the problem. In this case, it says that it is unable to resolve the device IP to a hostname. This is because that the default mode of discovery was to find a resolvable hostname for whichever IP Address is being used to monitor the device by. But this device doesn’t have a hostname in our resolution system so we have to resolve this problem by either deleting it or modifying it by choosing a different way to name it.
As to modify this device, one approach is to leave the IP Address as it is and name it by the IP Address. Another approach would be to add a completely custom name and just enter a name. The third one would be to use its SNMP system name which is actually pulled from the device using SNMP. Learn more details about how to modify the device’s attributes.
You will be able to add it after the modification and that should be able to be taken under management after a few minutes. The reachable icons should change to a green check and the normal circumstances indicating that the devices are responding to both Ping and SNMP requests.
